Automobile Dealer Window Stickers

Updated 10/12/2020

For decades, car dealers and retailers have been required to provide consumers with important purchasing information. For new cars, that includes everything from vehicle make and model to fuel economy, crash test ratings, and of course, the price tag.

For used car sales, different details are required, such as warranties and defects. This information must stand up to damaging elements such as sun, wind, and rain. To solve this concern, we created car dealer window stickers that allow for printing on the same side as the adhesive. These automobile window stickers are perfect for applying to the inside of a car window, away from many of nature's destructive elements.

What's the difference between a Monroney sticker and a Buyers Guide?

A Monroney sticker is required for new cars and is a result of the Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958. Years later, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) stepped in to protect used car buyers.

In 1985, it passed the Used Motor Vehicle Trade Regulation Rule, known today as the Used Car Rule, requiring dealers to display a Buyers Guide.

A Monroney sticker must include:

  • The make, model, and serial or identification number of the car
  • The final assembly point of the car
  • The name, location, and place of business of the dealer to whom the car is to be delivered
  • The name of the city or town at which the car is to be delivered to the dealer
  • The method of transportation used to deliver the car, whether it is driven or towed
  • The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the car
  • The manufacturer's suggested retail price for optional equipment installed on the car
  • The amount charged to the dealer for the transportation of the car to the place of delivery
  • The total amount of the last three items listed above
  • Engine and transmission specifications
  • Standard equipment and warranty details
  • City and highway fuel economy ratings determined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

A Buyers Guide must include:

  • Whether the vehicle is being sold "as is" or with a warranty
  • The warranty's terms and conditions, if applicable, including:
    • The duration of the coverage
    • The percentage of total repair costs the dealer will pay
    • Which vehicle systems the warranty covers
  • The major mechanical and electrical systems on the car, as well as some of the major problems that consumers should look out for
  • Advice for buyer protection
    • That oral promises are difficult to enforce
    • To get all promises in writing
    • To ask to have the car inspected by an independent mechanic before they buy
    • To get a vehicle history report and to visit ftc.gov/usedcars for information on how to get a vehicle history report, how to check for safety recalls, and other topics
    • To ask for a Spanish Buyers Guide if the sale is conducted in Spanish
    • To keep the Buyers Guide for reference after the sale

Where does the name "Monroney sticker" come from?

Like many famous products, food dishes, and legal rulings, Monroney stickers are named after the man responsible for them. Senator Almer Stillwell "Mike" Monroney was put in charge of stopping deceptive car dealers from abusing their power and adding unnecessary markups to the asking price.

As chairman of the Senate subcommittee, Senator Monroney was able to push the legislation through in just three years.

How To Display Automobile Window Stickers

Both the Monroney sticker and Buyers Guides must be placed in a prominent and inconspicuous location on or in the vehicle with both sides clearly visible. Failing to do show could result in fines ranging from $1,000 to $40,000 per vehicle or violation.

Car Window Sticker Options

We offer the car information panel sticker in three sizes: traditional, addendum regular, and addendum narrow.

Our traditional window decal is an 8.5" x 11" sheet with a 0.5" adhesive margin on each side, resulting in a printable area of 7.5" x 10". This is the main information sheet for displaying car statistics. Shop full-size automobile window labels (OL9800).

Addendum Used Car Window Stickers

Addendum Regular: For cars that have a lengthy list of features, facts, or data, we offer a supplementary window sticker panel. The 8.5" x 11" sheet features a perforation down the center, separating it into two panels.

Each panel has the same 0.5" adhesive margin on each side, resulting in a printable area of 3.75" x 10.5". These labels are great for showing all of your vehicle upgrades as well as dealer-installed accessories. Shop standard addendum car panel decals (OL338).

Addendum Narrow: When a minimal amount of information is necessary but doesn't warrant an additional label sheet or addendum decal, a smaller addendum sticker panel is available.

The 8.5" x 11" sheet has two perforated cuts, breaking the 8.5" x 11" sheet into three sections. Each one has a 0.5" margin surrounding the four sides, forming a 2.375" x 10" printable area. These are also perfect for listing add-ons and upgrades to your vehicles. Shop slim addendum window stickers (OL2319).

How They Work

How to peel "reverse cut" car dealer window sticker label sheet

All of our car dealership window stickers are "reverse cut." With standard labels, you print on the facesheet and peel off the liner from the back. With reverse-cut labels, you print on the liner side. You expose the adhesive by peeling off the liner from the border of the sheet, leaving the center liner and information untouched.

Material Composition

The printable liner side of these labels consists of a non-yellowing material, ensuring that direct contact with sunlight won't ruin your window stickers, no matter how long they may sit on the lot.

Customization Methods

We offer both Monroney window sticker templates and Buyers Guide templates that will make creating your labels a breeze. View the car label templates in our pre-designed labels section or access them below.

Note: The following Buyers Guide templates have been updated to reflect the November 2016 amendments to the Used Car Rule. However, prior versions of the Buyers Guides will remain valid until January 27, 2018 to allow dealers to deplete their existing inventory.

Printing Process

Our decals are compatible with both inkjet and laser printers. The non-yellowing material and the reverse-cut engineering also make it possible to print on both sides of these labels.

Application Tip

After printing your information, you are free to remove the strip bordering the printable area, exposing the adhesive. Be sure not to peel off the adhesive liner too early, it should not be removed until the sheet is ready to be applied to the intended surface.
