Introduction
We started the interview with Tom Muller, the owner and president of Ocean Blue Logistics, or Blue Logistics for short. He walked us through the factory and explained the company's beginnings.
“We do fulfillment, warehousing, and assembly work. It started in 1999, so it's been around for a couple of years. We're pretty boutique, so we specialize in personal care. That could be dietary supplements or skincare products.”
Customer Interaction
Blue Logistics always takes a personal approach to its clients and prioritizes their needs and business ideas.
“What happens a lot is someone says they've got a great new formula for anti-aging wrinkle cream or a new dietary supplement for heart health. They're going to start launching into the industry. They want to get direct to consumers. They may want to be on the Home Shopping Network. They may want to be at Costco, so they're reaching out to find a provider to handle that distribution.”
Logistics and Operations
Quality control is the key! Muller repeatedly emphasized that once the product enters the doors, Blue Logistics makes sure they go directly to quality check, followed by inventory control.
“Storing is very important. And then we'll pull it, or they're going to go direct to consumer and then they're going to have a certain kind of packaging. Is it going to be a polymail or is it going to be a carton? With the startups and the smaller people, you're talking ten, 12 hours a day, very mom and pop.”
From Small Business to Enterprises
Blue Logistics loves working with any business, whether in development or already established.
“So we service the little customers. They're growing, and hopefully they're going to keep growing. And then a little more the medium size. And then our large customers are doing over a thousand consumer orders a day. Probably 15 years ago, We moved all that production to OnlineLabels. The lead times with other suppliers was months.”
Time and Delivery Operations
Blue Logistics requires quick turnaround and flexibility with its label supplier. They rely on OnlineLabels to get their labels on time.
“We can go pick it up, order three or four pallets and have it in a couple of weeks. And we know it's going to be quality. It's the way it has to be. You have the inner label, the outer label, the carton label, the pallet label, the location label for stores, the receiving label. It's not just the package slip.”
“The other labels we go through tens of thousands of a day is item numbers. Or, Amazon requires a little sticker [on the product] with the item number or UPC. Our customers are seeing there's more personal touch. They want to see [the products] wrapped in tissue [or they want to see] messaging on that on that packing slip.”
“It's going back to a little bit more of that extra service. It's not just your Amazon order for laundry detergent. It's for the high-end skincare products. They want a better experience for the consumer. And we're the last leg in the chain, right? So they've designed it they built it and of course, we're the last part of that chain.”
