What is a self-mailer?
A self-mailer is a series of unbound sheets folded to make panels. It must be sealed to prevent opening in the USPS mail sorters or during transit.
What is the most common way to seal self-mailers?
Tabs (wafer seals) are one of the most common ways to seal your mailer, followed by glue.
What label materials are best for use as wafer seals?

How many wafer seals does my self-mailer need?
The number and size of tabs depends on your mailer’s weight and design.
- Bi-fold mailers require one non-perforated tab on the top middle.
- Tri-fold mailers require two non-perforated tabs on the top edges.
- Quarter-fold mailers require three non-perforated tabs. One must be placed on the leading edge, another on the trailing edge, and the final on the lower leading edge.
- Oblong mailers require two tabs. They can be placed together along the trailing edge or separately, with one along the top-center and the other along the trailing-center.
How far should my wafer seal be from the edge of my self-mailer?
Tabs should be placed at least 1 inch away from the edges but should not overlap or otherwise interfere with the postage.
Can wafer seals be perforated for use with the USPS?
As of 2009, perforated wafer seals are no longer allowed to seal self-mailers.
